Career: 

1854 – first public exhibition: at Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti (Society to Promote the Fine Arts, Florence)

1855 – meets Cristiano Banti and Vincenzo Cabianca at Caffe Michelangelo (Florence); group evolves into the Macchiailoi

1862 – founds Macchiaioli school, Scuole di Pergentina, with Silvestro Lega and Giuseppe Abbati

1873 – The Cascine in Florence wins gold medal at Weltausstellung (World Exhibition) in Vienna; works for the dealers Goupil and Reitlinger in Paris

1876 – exhibits at Centennial International Exposition (Philadelphia)

1877 – exhibits at Esposizione Nazionale (Naples)

1878 – exhibits at Exposition universelle (Paris)

1883 – exhibits in London at Royal Academy and Grosvenor Gallery; visits Paris and meets  Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas, with whom he regularly corresponds

1888 – appointed professor at Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts), Naples and at Accademia di Belle Arti e Liceo Artistica (Academy of Fine Arts and Art High School), Bologna

1889 – oversees Italian section of Exposition universelle (Paris) with Giovanni Boldini

1892 – named Honorary Associate of Accademia di Belle Arti, Florence; teaches drawing at Royal Institute of Higher Learning in Florence

1896 – named Honorary Associate of t Accademia Lingustica di Belle Arti, Genoa

1897 – exhibits at the Venice Biennale, also in 1899

1900 – exhibits at the Munich Exhibition

1902 – retrospective exhibition of at Turin Quadriennale
